Oostende
Off-grid floating photovoltaic
In 2022, HelioRec initiated a 10 kW off-grid floating solar project at the Port of Oostende on the Belgian coast. This port is a significant hub for energy and maritime industries, making it an ideal site for a sustainable energy solution such as floating solar.
The Port of Oostende’s vision to become a green energy hub aligns seamlessly with HelioRec’s mission to introduce renewable energy to coastal and urban areas.
The floating solar power plant at Oostende incorporates advanced technologies that enhance energy production while enduring the dynamic conditions of the North Sea. By concentrating on nearshore areas, HelioRec accesses regions where traditional land-based solar installations may not be practical due to land scarcity or high real estate costs.
The off-grid system was deployed in a nearshore port environment at the Port of Oostende. The 10 kWp installation supplies local electrical loads and demonstrates the performance of floating solar under coastal wind and wave exposure.
Capacity: 10 kWp
Maximum wind speed: 114 km/h
Maximum wave height: 1 m
Application: Nearshore port environment, off-grid operation.
The project validated the structural behavior, anchoring stability, and electrical performance of a small-scale nearshore FPV under elevated wind conditions and moderate wave exposure.
The system was decommissioned in 2026.
